RUTLAND, Vt. – Castleton's men's tennis dropped a tough North Atlantic Conference East Division match this afternoon, as the Green Mountain College Eagles captured a 6-3 victory at Grand Slam Tennis in Rutland, Vt.
The Spartans were able to notch a pair of singles wins in straight sets, but struggled elsewhere, as the Eagles recorded four straight sets singles victories while also capturing two of the three doubles games. Castleton now stands at 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference with the losing effort, whereas Green Mountain remains perfect on the season at 5-0 overall (4-0) after picking up the win.
Seth Marcil continued his strong play in singles action for the Spartans with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory in the second-flight match. With the win, the junior improves to 6-3 in singles play and has recorded a team-best ten victories this season. Tyler Wilcox, meanwhile, notched his fifth singles win of the season with a straight sets – 6-1, 6-3 – victory in the No. 5 slot.
Castleton put on a solid fight in the doubles games by collecting at least four points in all three contests. The tandem of Andrew Overton and Christopher Belanger captured its first doubles victory of the season with an 8-4 result in the second flight match, while Tyler Konopka and Wilcox dropped to 2-2 on the season after falling in the No. 3 slot, 9-7.
The Spartans return to action this Saturday at 1 pm when they host the Thomas (Me.) Terriers in conference play at Grand Slam Tennis.
