CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton's men's tennis team climbed back to .500 this afternoon, as they captured a 7-2 victory over the Lyndon St. Hornets at Grand Slam Tennis in Rutland, Vt.
The Spartans turned in a solid display with four straight sets singles victories, including one in the top-flight match, while also sweeping the doubles games. With the victory, Castleton improves to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while the Hornets fall to 0-4 overall (0-3).
Seth Marcil continued his impressive start to the season by improving his team-best victories total to nine with a pair of wins. In singles play, the junior captured the third-flight match with a 6-1, 6-0 result to improve to 5-3 on the season. He followed that up by teaming with Kyle Martin in the No. 1 singles match, winning 8-3.
Martin, meanwhile, snagged his first singles victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-1 decision in the top-flight match, while Andrew Overton and Tyler Wilcox recorded straight sets victories in the No. 4 and 5 singles slots.
Overton teamed with Christopher Belanger in the second-flight doubles contest and improved their record to 1-1 on the season with an 8-5 victory, while the tandem of Wilcox and Tyler Konopka completed the squad's sweep of the doubles games with an 8-3 victory.
The Spartans return to action next week when they host the Green Mountain College Eagles on Tuesday at 5 pm and the Thomas (Me.) Terriers on Saturday at 1 pm.
