CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton men's soccer team captured its first win of the season versus SUNY Canton, 3-1, at Dave Wolk Stadium on Wednesday.
Senior Jack Kingdon scored twice to lead the Spartans offensively and overtake the team-lead with three goals on the season. Junior Jacob Godfrey also scored his first goal of the season. Colby Gay and Rida Kori each registered one assist.
With the win, Castleton improves to 1-3-0 on the season and after suffering its first loss, Canton sits at 2-1-2.
Freshman Andres Soto-Burgos earned his first-career victory for the Spartans in goal. He made a pair of saves in his first start as a Spartan. Dawson Pellerin took the loss after allowing all three goals in the opening half. Tyler Peterson played 90 minutes of shutout action for the Roos in the second half.
Godfrey put the Spartans up 1-0 early in the contest at the 3:41 mark. It was a header after Gay played a right-to-left ball to Godfrey in front of the goal. Kingdon got the first of his pair of goals 14:55 into the contest. Shortly after a Canton turnover at midfield, Kori received a pass and took a step before bumping a pass beyond the Roo defensive line in space for the streaking Kingdon, who finished with a left-foot strike.
Then, Kingdon made it 3-0 after settling a bouncing ball deep in Canton territory and firing it into the back of the net with 25:05 remaining in the first stanza.
Canton scored the only goal of the second half. Brett Anderson drilled a shot from long-range that slipped through Soto-Burgos.
Castleton out-shot Canton in the contest, 19-8. The Spartans also had a hefty 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
Castleton returns to action at home on Saturday at 7 p.m. for a non-conference matchup with Springfield
