Men's Soccer Storms Past Green Mountain

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton men's soccer team had its offense firing on all cylinders Tuesday afternoon, scoring early and often en route to a 9-0 shutout victory over Green Mountain in a North Atlantic Conference matchup at Spartan Stadium. 

With the win, Castleton improved to 2-5-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play. Green Mountain, meanwhile, fell to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in NAC action.

Castleton finished with 22 shots on goal while holding Green Mountain to just one. Seraphin Iradukunda, Jacob Godfrey, and Abinash Rai each finished with two goals in the match. Tatenda Shumba, Fidele Rutayisire, and Arun Karki each netted their first goals of the season. Iradukunda also added an assist to lead the Spartans with five points offensively.

The Spartans were on the board just less than six minutes into the contest, as Iradukunda netted his team-leading third goal of the season on an assist from Rutayisire. The latter provided a cross into the box, where Iradukunda beat the goaltender inside the right post.

Godfrey doubled the Spartan lead less than six minutes later, finishing an assist from Jack Kingdon near the top of the box to give the Spartans a 2-0 advantage in the 11th minute. Iradukunda netted his second goal of the match off an assist from Sean Springer in the 18th minute, firing another low shot inside the right post past the Green Mountain goalkeeper. Rutayisire finished a tic-tac-toe later in the half on assists from Ryan Nelson and Iradukunda to lift the Spartans' lead to 4-0 at the break.

Castleton continued a strong effort in the second half, doubling their lead over the final 45 minutes. Godfrey got things started with his second goal of the contest just over two minutes into the stanza. Shumba found the back of the net in the 69th minute, surrounded by a pair of tallies from Rai as the Spartans secured an 8-0 lead down the stretch. Karki notched the final goal in the 79th minute, as Castleton went on to win, 9-0.

Aaron Parker and Alex Fernald split the game between the pipes, with Parker earning the start and his second victory of the season to move to 2-5-1. Fernald made one stop over the final 45 minutes of play. Griffin Shelor made 12 stops in 90 minutes between the pipes for Green Mountain. 

Castleton returns to action Saturday, Sept. 23, to face Lyndon on the road at 1 p.m.
