GORHAM, Maine – The Castleton men's soccer team was unable to find its offensive stride in the final day of the Husky Fall Classic, as Coast Guard Academy defeated the Spartans, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at Southern Maine's Hannaford Field.
Following the loss, Castleton falls to 0-2 on the young season. Coast Guard moves to 1-1 with the win.
Coast Guard scored a pair of goals in each half and held up a strong defensive display, holding the Spartans to two shots on goal. Luke Telang opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a low drive that snuck inside the far post from 25 yards out. Garrett Magill finished a through ball from Gio Ottomanelli in the 35th minute to double the Bears' lead before halftime.
Castleton looked to gain momentum early in the second half after Jack Kingdon landed a corner kick in the 49th minute. Josh Mathews was able to find space and get a shot on goal during the early Spartan pressure, but Coast Guard goalkeeper Jake Sorenson was able to make the save.
Less than three minutes later, Telang scored his second goal of the contest in the 52nd minute on an assist from Landon Klopfenstein. The Bears added another goal by Ottomanelli in the 74th minute to secure the 4-0 victory.
Mathews and Cam Rossi-Crete tallied the shots on goal for the Spartans. Aaron Parker made five saves in the contest. Following the match, Thomas Kirk and Rossi-Crete were recognized on the All-Tournament Team.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday for their home opener against SUNY Poly at 7 p.m.
