Castleton Men’s Lacrosse Loses to Kean

CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton University could not get a sustained offensive attack going, as Kean University pulled away late for a 9-5 victory Saturday afternoon in a non-conference collegiate men's lacrosse game at Spartan Stadium.

Brian Mills was the scoring star for Kean, as he scored his first goal of the game just over two minutes into the match. Castleton tied the game five minutes later as Louis Alhage set up Tom Pardew for his ninth goal of the season, but the Cougars regained the lead with 4:43 remaining in the first period on a goal by Matt Brodley.

The game remained 2-1 until late in the second period, when Mills scored his second goal of the match. Lucas Kiernan grabbed the ensuing faceoff, raced down the field, and whipped the ball into the net for his third goal of the season to extend the Kean lead to 4-1 at halftime.

Just over three minutes into the second half, Sam Frackleton found Sam Siegel for a goal that cut the Castleton deficit to two. However, with just 25 seconds remaining in the third period, Brodley found Mills to extend the Cougar advantage back to three at 5-2.

The game remained a defensive battle until 8:15 remained in the fourth quarter, when Mills scored his fourth goal of the day off an assist by Alec Ramos. Three minutes later, Mills converted again, this time with Cole Blackley on the assist, and then Scott Royster scored with 3:55 left in regulation to give Kean its biggest lead of the game at 8-2.

The Castleton offense woke up, scoring three of the final four goals of the match, starting with a tally by Isaac Devoid off an assist from Siegel. After Kevin Dolan scored for the Cougars, Alhage and Kevin McCarthy both scored in the final minute of the game to close the final margin to four.

Siegel led the Spartans with one goal and two assists, while Alhage finished with one goal, one assists, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Cameron Russell led Castleton with four ground balls, and Brandon Myron made 13 saves in net for the Spartans, his highest single-game total of saves since a 15-save performance at MIT April 4.

Kean (7-6) was led by Mills's five goals on 15 shots, plus he picked up six ground balls, while Brodley finished with one goal and one assist. Ryan Sieb earned the victory in net for the Cougars, making eight saves during the afternoon.

Castleton (6-7) hits the road for a non-conference game at in-state rival Norwich Tuesday, April 18, at 7 p.m. The Spartans close out the regular season with conference games at Johnson State Thursday, April 20, against Green Mountain Monday, April 24, and at Lyndon State Tuesday, April 25.
