SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Castleton University men's hockey team suffered a 7-0 defeat on the road at St. Michael's College on Saturday afternoon.
The letdown for the Spartans comes a day after a dramatic 2-1 victory over nationally second-ranked Norwich. Castleton drops to 3-7-1, while St. Mike's earned the weekend sweep to improve to 6-3-1.
Matt Schreiner led the way for the Purple Knights with two goals and an assist. Paul McAuliffe also scored twice, and four other players had multi-point performances. Sam Johnson, Andrew Olevitz, and Cameron Stewart each finished with a goal and an assist.
Despite the lopsided score, Castleton actually outshot St. Michael's, 40-38. Freshman Alec Lindberg turned aside all 40 shots he saw to earn his first-career shutout.
Castleton was paced offensively by Asa Palker and Glenn Wiswell with five shots on goal apiece. Brandon Collett, fresh off a 54-save performance, made 19 saves in 32:17 of action. Kyle Alaverdy played 27:31 relief and surrendered the remaining three goals while making 12 saves.
St. Mike's led 1-0 after the first period, but three goals in both the second and third periods accounted for the lopsided margin.
Castleton returns home next weekend for a weekend non-conference series versus Bryn Athyn to close out the semester.
