RUTLAND, Vt. – The Castleton men's hockey team fell to Nazareth, 6-1, in the Castleton Invitational semifinals Friday evening at Spartan Arena.
Nazareth will meet Fredonia in the tournament final on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Blue Devils played to a scoreless tie with nationally 15th-ranked Curry earlier in the day before moving on by winning the shootout, 1-0. Castleton will duel it out with Curry on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Ray Falso finished with two goals for the Golden Flyers. Brian Miller and Justin Miller both finished with three points on the evening with a goal and two assists each. Cole Moore also scored once and added an assist, while Matt Stanek had two helpers.
Nazareth got on the board first at the 2:11 mark of the opening period. Moore scored it from the point after an initial shot was blocked. Falso scored at the 11:48 mark on a short-angle wrister to make it 2-0.
The lead ballooned to three 3:25 into the middle period when Falso got his second when a shot from the point hit a Spartan defender and ricocheted to him in the slot. Justin Miller got his team-leading seventh goal of the year at 10:29 of the second period on a tremendous individual effort on a cost-to-coast rush. Flyer goalie Sean Kuhn collected an assist on the play.
After Castleton got on the board at 16:51, Brian Miller made it 5-1 with 57 seconds left in the period. James McDonald scored the only goal of the third period at 16:48 to complete the scoring.
Kuhn earned his second win of the season by making 26 saves. Brandon Collett turned aside 23 shots for the Spartans. Nazareth (4-3-1) scored twice on the power play to finish 2-for-6, and Castleton was 1-for-5 with the man-advantage.
