Ian Sawtelle

Ian Sawtelle enters his 7th season as a coach (throwing events) of the Spartan men's and women's track & field programs and his first as Head Coach.  Under Sawtelle, Castleton throwers have broken 21 indoor and outdoor records, 8 have earned13 All-LEC accolades, 2 have received All-New England Athlete designation, 4 have been named all LEC rookie athlete, 5 throwers have earned All USTFCCCA Regional Honors and 8 have earned all LEC academic honors and 1 second team All-American.

The 2024-15 Indoor and Outdoor seasons named Wayne Alexander the Indoor MVP after providing new personal records in the mile, 500, 600, and 800 meter runs. The senior competed at the 2025 New England DIII Indoor T&F Championship, where he ran a 1:24.42 in the 600m for a new personal record. Jon Hendley was named the team's outdoor MVP after setting two new school records this season. He set the school record in the 10,000m run with a time 32:55.34, taking first place in his race. A couple weeks later, he then set the program record in the 1500m run, clocking in a 4:05.18 at the Sean Collier Invitational where he placed 8th overall.  
 
The women's track and field team took the next step forward as a young and up-incoming program. Leading the way for them was team MVP Kalynn Stevenson who had another incredible year in her sophomore season. In the indoor season finished third at the indoor LEC championships in the shot put, setting a new program record with a toss of 12.28m and claiming Third-Team All-LEC honors. In the outdoor season, she improved her school records in two events. Her first coming in the shot put, where she placed third at the outdoor LEC championships with a toss of 12.65m, where she claimed Third-Team All-LEC honors. Stevenson followed up a week later at the New England DIII Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where she exploded for a toss of 43.91m in the discus throw which placed her 2nd in the event and set a new program record.  

Sawtelle earned his Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from SUNY Plattsburgh in 2005.  While at SUNY Plattsburgh, he competed in both the shotput and discus.  In 2005 Coach Sawtelle earned all ECAC honors in the discus. He now holds a USATF level 1 certification.

Sawtelle is an Investigator with the Vermont Department of Liquor and Lottery and was a Vermont State Trooper for 18 years prior, where he served as a Trooper / Corporal assigned to patrol, the Executive Protection Unit, and the Office of Professional Development. He has instructed use of force, patrol procedures at the Vermont Police Academy, and served as a drill instructor for the Vermont State Police and was a member of the Vermont State Police Underwater Recovery Team. 

Sawtelle lives in Rutland, Vermont with his wife Diana and their daughter Elizabeth “Liz” and son Aidan.
