CASTLETON, Vt. – Sarah Wells followed up her Little East Conference (LEC) Offensive Player of the Week recognition by scoring a hat trick and adding an assist as the Castleton University field hockey team improved to 4-0 in conference play with a 5-2 victory over Plymouth State on Tuesday.
It was Wells' second hat trick of her career; the first in a 7-2 win at River on Oct. 22, 2017. She is now in sole possession of fourth place in the LEC in goals (eight) and points (20).
With the win, Castleton improves to 6-2 overall and shares first-place in the LEC with Keene State (8-1, 4-0 LEC). Plymouth State drops to 2-5 (2-3 LEC).
The Spartans took the lead at the 25:21 mark when Allison Lowell scored on a corner put in by Cydney Jeffrey, and set up by Wells. Just under two minutes later, Lowell sent a ball in on a restart to Wells, 20 yards ahead, who spun and beat the goalie on a bouncing shot inside the right post.
Wells scored her second goal on her own rebound 4:39 into the second half after a centering attempt ricocheted to her in front. Then, Kaihley Rafferty put Plymouth State on the board just 30 seconds later when a long centering attempt made its way to her for a breakaway.
At 50:33, Wells completed the hat trick by burying a reverse-stick shot from four yards out on a pass from Olivia Trevisani.
Mariah Luscher pulled the Panthers to within two at 55:13 when she scored on a scramble in front. Then, Blakeney tapped in a pass from Gabriella Hunt just in front of the left post with just 2:07 remaining in regulation.
The Spartans will travel to UMass-Dartmouth (1-6, 1-3 LEC) on Saturday for a 12 p.m. start.
