WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team battled with the Ephs of Williams College on Friday night, narrowly falling 19-18.
11th-ranked
Drew Marchese opened the night with the only technical fall win, 18-1, putting Castleton up 5-0 after the 125-pound bout.
Stone Farnsworth fell in a 4-1 decision at 133 pounds as the lead was cut to two.
Jack Voute earned an 11-2 major decision win at 141 pounds, as the Spartan took a 9-3 lead, which
Dylan Vanegas followed up with a tight 8-6 decision at 149, putting the team up 12-3.
Nathaniel Camiscioli matched up with the third-ranked Peter Kane at 157 pounds, falling in a 7-6 decision as the Ephs started to come back.
14th-ranked
Jashon Holmes fell via a 10-6 decision at 165 pounds, followed by
Joseph Baker falling in a 7-1 decision at 174 pounds to eighth-ranked Gage Wiggins as Williams tied the match at 12. The Ephs took the lead following the 184-pound match as 12th-ranked Jamie Evarts earned a 15-3 major decision win over 15th-ranked
Desmond McLaughlin. 14th-ranked
Josh Negron battled until the final whistle at 197 pounds, falling in a 2-1 decision as Williams took a 19-12 lead, solidifying their win.
Logan Frank notched the only pin of the day at 285 pounds, but it was not enough as the Spartans fell 19-18.
The team heads to Coast Guard on Sunday, February 15 for the NEWA Futures tournament, set for 11 a.m.*
