CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team leads the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) in both team dual and tournament rankings, as announced Thursday. Ten wrestlers are ranked in the top 10 of their weight classes.
Drew Marchese was named NEWA Wrestler of the Week after going 2-0 at the LEC Tri-Match, earning his 100th career win.
Marchese swept his two matches during Saturday's Tri-Match, taking down Domenic Sousa of Rhode Island College with a pin in 6:30 for his 100th collegiate career win. He followed up with another pin, this time in 2:30 over Carter Noble of Southern Maine. With those two wins, the senior moved to 24-5 on the season, claiming his first conference award of the year.
Castleton moved into first in the team tournament rankings, with 95 team points, followed closely by Coast Guard with 92 points in second. Springfield College collected 81 team points for third, with Johnson & Wales claiming fourth with 80 points, and Williams College rounding out the top five with 76 points. In the team dual rankings, the Spartans (12-6) sit first, followed by Johnson & Wales, Coast Guard, Williams College, and Springfield College, which rounds out the top five.
The Spartans have one top-ranked wrestler in Marchese at 125 pounds, adding to his week of accolades. Three wrestlers occupy the second spot in their respective weight classes, in
Nathaniel Camiscioli (157),
Desmond McLaughlin (184), and
Josh Negron (197).
Stone Farnsworth (133),
Nicolas Balella (141), and
Jashon Holmes all placed third in their weight classes, with Holmes also securing his 100th career win during last weekend's tri-match.
Joseph Kennedy sits sixth at 149 pounds, with
Keonta Crawford seventh at 285, and
Joseph Baker rounding out Castleton's ranked wrestlers in eighth at 174 pounds.
Three Spartans earned recognition in this week's Open Mat rankings, with the team placing 10th in the team dual rankings. Negron was slotted ninth at 197 pounds, while Marchese earned 11th at 125, and McLaughlin was placed 20th at 184 pounds.
The squad travels to Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday, January 24, for the Wildcat Open, hosted by Johnson & Wales, which is set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
