Spartans Honored Winter Student-Athletes on Monday Night

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton winter student-athletes gathered in the Casella Theatre to celebrate their successes on Monday evening, with each program naming a team MVP and the President's Cup for Academic Excellence being handed out.

The women's alpine skiing program was awarded the Presidents Cup for Academic Excellence by Assistant Vice President for Athletics and Fitness Deanna Tyson. The award is given each season to the team with the highest cumulative grade point average. The team posted a GPA of 3.66. All seven winter programs had a team GPA above 3.0.

Men's Ice Hockey
The men's ice hockey program battled to a 5-18-2 record in 2024-25. The squad won three conference games and finished 10th in their final run in the New England Hockey Conference. The Spartans claimed a big 5-0 win on the road against Southern Maine and won the 2024 Terry Moran Invitational against King's College 7-6 in overtime. Team MVP Luke Chakrabarti was named tournament MVP after scoring the game-winning goal in overtime for the Spartans and finishing with three goals and two assists in the tournament. The first-year forward finished atop of the squad with 22 points (11G, 11A) in just 18 games played. He was named NEHC Player of the Week for his performance at the Terry Moran Invitational and was also a 2x NEHC Rookie of the Week.

Women's Ice Hockey
The women's ice hockey team continued its strong play with an 11-14-1 record in 2024-25. The Spartans clinched a seventh-seed playoff berth with a 7-10-1 record in their final season in the New England Hockey Conference. The Spartans closed the regular season winning five of their last seven games. Team MVP Moa Carlsson led the Spartans with a new career-high 20 points (11G, 9A) and was named to the All-NEHC First Team squad. Carlsson became Castleton's all-time leader in shorthanded goals when she scored her fifth career shorthanded goal in a 4-2 victory over Salem St. The junior forward provided a career-high four points (1G, 3A) in Castleton's massive 12-3 win over Albertus Magnus

Men's Basketball
The men's basketball team had a tough go during the 2024-25 season, but that did not stop Team MVP Will Radcliff, who started in all 24 contests for the Spartans. He led the team in seven of the main statistical categories; points (343), field goal percentage (51.7, 136-263), made free throws (64-93), rebounds (207), assists (62), blocked shots (20) and steals (2). Radcliff ranked third in the conference in average rebounds per contest with a mark of 8.6. The junior finished the season with nine double-doubles and was named to the 2024-25 Winter All-Academic Team.
 
Women's Basketball
The women's basketball program found new life in rookie Emily Dingmon, this year's Team MVP, who recorded the very first triple-double of the Division III women's basketball season against Hartwick on November 23, 2024, grabbing 22 rebounds, 11 points and 10 assists. Her 22 rebounds were a new program record. The Corinth, N.Y. native led her squad off the glass with 184 grabs, good enough for seventh in the conference, while sitting third in scoring with 229 points, averaging 12.7 points per game. She was named the LEC Rookie of the Week on January 13.  
 
Wrestling
The Castleton wrestling program reached new heights during the season, setting a new program record with 22 dual match wins. The Spartans set a program-best eight qualifiers to the NCAA National Championships. Team MVP Elijah Cyr made his first ever NCAA Championships appearance, winning his first match of the event to make it to the quarterfinals. Cyr finished the year with a record of 27-14 at 149 pounds.
 
Women's Alpine Skiing 
The women's alpine skiing team elevated to new heights during the 2025 season, finishing second overall at the USCSA National Championships, taking second in giant slalom and third in slalom. The team won eight races over the season, with 12 individual victories. Team MVP Emilie Stene had a record-breaking season, setting the new program record for women's alpine individual victories. She broke the previous record of 18 at West Mountain, and finished the season by extending it to 23 at the conclusion of her junior season. Stene was the USCSA Eastern Regional GS and SL champion, and placed third overall at USCSA Nationals.   
  
Men's Alpine Skiing 
The men's alpine skiing program battled through the 2025 season, placing sixth overall at the USCSA National Championships, with the first-year racers wasted no time making their mark on the program. The team had four podium finishers, and one race-winner. Team MVP Sondre Andersen came in hot in his rookie season, earning a second-place finish for his first podium finish in SL at Proctor. Andersen finished 10th in GS and SL in his first USCSA National Championship appearance, taking 10th overall.
