CASTLETON, VT. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's tennis team secured its first win of the season in dominant fashion, defeating Vermont State University Lyndon 7-2 in the Spartans' home opener on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans swept the doubles matches to take an early lead, with Miki Almirall and Alberto Lantelme cruising to an 8-0 victory at first doubles. Tanner Ciufo and Remy Maynard followed with an 8-1 win at the second spot, while Ben Chilkott and Trevor Castino closed out doubles play with an 8-3 victory at the third doubles.
In singles action, Almirall battled to a 6-4, 7-5 win at the top spot, while Ciufo earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 2. Lantelme dominated at No. 4 with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win. Castino secured another point for the Spartans after his opponent retired. Maynard and Chilkott both fought hard in their matches but ultimately fell, with Maynard pushing his opponent to a third-set tiebreaker.
The Spartans (1-1) will look to keep their momentum going when they travel to Bridgewater State University on Saturday, March 29, at 2 p.m.
