CASTLETON, Vt. – The sixth-ranked Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team wrapped up its dual match slate Friday night in front of an electric crowd for senior night in Glenbrook Gym, taking down Williams College 39-3.
The Spartans set a new single-season record for dual match victories with win 22, breaking last year's record of 20. Prior to the match, Castleton honored the program's 15 seniors who have given their time and dedication to the team for the past five years.
Gavin Bradley, ranked fifth nationally at 125 pounds, got the Spartans off to a hot start with a 15-3 win via major decision.
Drew Marchese followed with a 14-3 win at 133 pounds via major decision to put the Spartans up 8-0. Senior and fifth-ranked
James Rodriguez took down Tylor Stubbs at 141 pounds, pinning him in 2:50. Fellow classmate
Elijah Cyr defeated his opponent 4-1 via decision to give the Spartans a 17-0 lead. The lone dropped match for Castleton came at 157 pounds, with the second-ranked Peter Kane winning 2-1 via decision over
Nathaniel Camiscioli, ranked 12th, to bring the team score to 17-3.
At 164 pounds, 11th-ranked
Jashon Holmes earned an 8-0 win via major decision over his opponent.
Connor Gregory, ranked 15th at 174, took down Henry Forte 17-5 via major decision to lengthen the Spartans lead to 25-3. Fifth-ranked
Sampson Wilkins earned an electric win at 184 pounds via decision, followed by 14th-ranked
Haven Tatarek taking down his opponent, 22-6 via technical fall at 197 pounds to bring the team score to 33-3. In the final match of the night at 285 pounds, senior
Abbas Abdulrahman pinned his opponent in 1:58 to solidify the 39-3 victory.
The Spartans will compete at the NEWA Futures event next Sunday, February 23.
