Men's Ice Hockey Comes Up Short in High-Scoring Battle with Huskies

GORHAM, MAINE – The Vermont State University Castleton men's ice hockey team was unable to overcome the University of Southern Maine in a high scoring affair on Friday evening, falling 6-4.

The Basics
  • Final Score: University of Southern Maine 6, VTSU Castleton 4
  •  Location: USM Ice Arena – Gorham, Maine
  • Records: USM 4-1-0 (3-0-0 LEC) | Castleton 1-3-1 (1-2-0 LEC)
How It Happened
The first period was high scoring, with five goals between the pair. The hosts wasted little time, scoring in the second minute for a 1-0 advantage. Castleton answered at 5:41 on the power play as Cam Reid found Emmett McHardy to knot the game 1-1. The Spartans took the lead three minutes later as McHardy dished it to David Coyle for his first collegiate tally, making it 2-1. The Huskies responded with a pair of goals before the end of the opening stanza to take a 3-2 lead.

Both teams' defenses settled in during the middle period, allowing just 16 shots on goal through 20 minutes—nine by USM and seven by Castleton. The Spartans were able to once again tie the score as Tyler Burke beat the netminder at 19:55. Burke was assisted by Cedrick Theodore and Balint Mesterhazy.

After winning the first faceoff of the third period, Castleton went on an offensive tear, putting four shots on goal while several others went just wide. Despite the pressure, the Huskies scored first, tallying in the seventh minute to regain the lead, 4-3. They extended their advantage in the 10th minute to make it 5-3.

Luke Chakrabarti was finally able to record his first score of the season at 14:14 to pull his squad within one, 5-4. He was assisted by Theodore and McHardy.
All hopes of a comeback came to an end at 17:55 as USM added its sixth and final goal of the night.
