RUTLAND, Vt. — The Vermont State University Castleton men's tennis team outpowered the VTSU Lyndon Hornets on Sunday afternoon, scoring an 8-1 triumph to post an undefeated opening weekend.
Stanley Andersen and Liam Cramer teamed up to nab a quick 8-0 win at the third doubles slot. Second-flight pairing Jason Lipscomb/Khiem Nguyen experienced similar success with their victorious 8-2 set. Lyndon's Jeffrey Blais/David Gratton got a point back at the top spot as they slipped past Miki Almirall/Connor Davis by an 8-5 margin.
In singles, Andersen took down Gilbert Flores in a lone-set 8-0 triumph. Davis, Lipscomb, and Cramer each collected combined wins of 12-1 in flights 3-5. Almirall clawed to a 7-5 first set before his opponent retired, landing him the decision. First-year Spartan Nguyen tallied his second collegiate victory at the top slot in a 6-0, 6-2 bout against Jeffrey Blais to complete a singles sweep for Castleton.
The Spartans take a trip to Northfield, Vt. to face Norwich on Thursday, March 21 at 3 p.m.
