PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team competed at the East Coast Duals against No. 7 Baldwin Wallace and No. 24 Wabash Saturday afternoon. The Spartans fell 23-18 in match one of the day to No. 7 Baldwin Wallace and won match two over No. 24 Wabash, 24-19.
No. 7 Baldwin Wallace 23, No. 6 VTSU Castleton 18
Gavin Bradley opened up the day for the Spartans, defeating Doran Hoffman via tech fall, 16-0 at 125 pounds to put the Spartans up 5-0. Drew Marchese fell 18-3 via tech fall at 133 pounds, while James Rodriguez won by major decision at 141 pounds, 10-2, bringing the score to 9-5 Castleton. At 149 pounds, Elijah Cyr fell via decision, and Nathaniel Camiscioli fell by major decision at 157 pounds, giving Baldwin Wallace the lead after five matches.
At 165 pounds, Jashon Holmes fell by decision, 7-4 and Desmond McLaughlin fell via major decision at 174 pounds. Sampson Wilkins notched the Spartans third win of the match via major decision, 16-3 at 184 pounds, to make the score 19-13 Baldwin Wallace. Haven Tatarek put up a fight at 197 pounds, falling 4-1 in sudden victory. Abbas Abdulrahman earned a win via tech fall, 20-5 at 285 pounds to finish the Spartans first dual of the day, to bring the Spartans to 18 team points.
No. 6 VTSU Castleton 24, No. 24 Wabash 19
Bradley earned his second win of the day at 125 pounds, pinning his opponent in 1:18 to put Castleton up 6-0. Marchese fell by major decision at 133 pounds, to bring the team score to 6-4 Spartans. At 141 pounds, Rodriguez defeated Mason Weyant by decision, 7-2 to put the Spartans up 9-4. Cyr fell by major decision at 149 pounds, 16-4 to bring Wabash within one. At 157 pounds, Wabash took over the lead, going up 12-9 following Camiscioli's loss via major decision.
At 165 pounds, Holmes tied the match at 12 with an 8-2 win via decision, before McLaughlin fell via decision at 174 pounds. Wilkins took down Sammy Saunders via pin in 1:42 to put the Spartans up 18-15 heading into the final two matches. Tatarek dropped his second match of the day via major decision at 197 pounds, before Abdulrahman earned his second win, pinning his opponent in 56 seconds, to give the Spartans the 24-19 victory.
The Spartans are back in action after the holiday break on Friday, January 10 for the NWCA National Duals.
