Wrestling Sweeps Stevens Tech Quad With Wins Over No. 7 Roanoke, No. 15 Stevens, and Ursinus

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team swept the Stevens Institute of Technology Quad Saturday evening, taking down No. 7 Roanoke University, No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology, and Ursinus College.
 

VTSU Castleton 20, Roanoke University 16

No. 8 Castleton was off to a hot start on the day, with Gavin Bradley opening the afternoon for the Spartans at 125 pounds with a 5-3 win via decision to put the Spartans up 3-0. Drew Marchese (133), and James Rodriguez (141) dropped their matches via fall and decision to give Roanoke a 9-3 lead. Elijah Cyr (149) slipped past Dustin Smith with an 8-6 win via decision, before Nathaniel Camiscioli (157) tied the match at nine with a 6-1 win via decision.
 

Jashon Holmes (165) fell via decision, putting Roanoke up 12-9 before Desmond McLaughlin (174) won via decision to tie the match at 12. Sampson Wilkins (184) won via decision, and Haven Tatarek (197) fell via major decision to put Roanoke up 16-15 going into the final match. Evan Day (285) took down Nicholas Cook via tech fall to give the Spartans the 20-16 victory in match one of the day.
 

VTSU Castleton 48, Ursinus College 0

Wrestling their only non-ranked opponent of the day, Castleton jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead behind Bradley's (125) pin in 2:28. Kaya Bogle (133) won via tech fall, and Rodriguez (141) won via decision to put the Spartans up 14-0. Rookie Nicolas Balella (149) won via decision, with Camiscioli winning via tech fall.
 

Connor Gregory (165) pinned Nicolas Rehfuss in 2:50, and Syrus Colon (174) pinned his opponent in 51 seconds to bring the Spartans up to a 34-0 lead. Wilkins (184) took down his opponent via tech fall, and Tatarek (197) won via major decision. Abbas Abdulrahman won via tech fall to secure the 48-0 victory for the Spartans.
 

VTSU Castleton 23, Stevens Institute of Technology 16

In the Spartans final match of the day, taking on No. 15 Stevens, Bradley (125) earned his second pin of the day in 1:30 to give Castleton a 6-0 lead. Marchese (133) defeated Vincent Principe via tech fall to lengthen the lead to 11-0 for the Spartans. Rodriguez (141) fell via decision, as did Cyr (149) to bring the Ducks within five.
 

Camiscioli (157) took down his opponent via decision before Holmes (165) fell via decision to bring the match to 14-9 Spartans. McLaughlin (174) dropped his match via decision, with Wilkins (184) pulling out a 9-5 win via decision to put Castleton up 17-12. Tatarek (197) fell via major decision before Day (285) pinned his final opponent of the day in 1:30 to give the Spartans their third and final win of the day, 23-16.
 

The Spartans return to action on Saturday, December 7 at the Ted Reese Invitational at Southern Maine for a 10 a.m. start.
