NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The ninth-ranked Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team continues its reign as Green Mountain Champions, following a 43-3 win over Norwich in the annual Battle for the Green Mountain Championship.
VTSU Castleton and Norwich are the only two collegiate wrestling programs in the state of Vermont. Since the Spartans' inaugural season of wrestling in 2016, they have met seven times for the trophy matchup, with Castleton winning each of the last six Green Mountain Championship titles.
Gavin Bradley opened the night for the Spartans at 125 pounds, pinning Robert Lyons in the first period at the 1:33 mark to give the Spartans a 6-0 lead.
Kaya Bogle earned three more points for the Spartans, winning via decision 9-3 at 133 pounds.
Tylik Epps came in at 141 pounds, collecting a pin in 2:44 for the second pin of the night to put Castleton up 15-0.
At 149 pounds, first year
Nicolas Balella earned the Spartans first tech fall of the night, 18-2 to put the Spartans up 20-0. The Spartans only dropped match of the night came at 157 pounds, with
Jacob Caricato falling via decision.
Connor Gregory collected the second tech fall of the night at 165 pounds, winning 19-4 giving the Spartans a 25-3 lead.
Syrus Colon got the nod at 174 pounds, winning via decision 10-4 to further lengthen the lead for Castleton.
Sampson Wilkins gave Castleton its third pin of the night at 184 pounds, needing 1:25 to take down Cooper Galvin to put the Spartans ahead 34-3. At 197 pounds,
Josh Negron collected the fourth and final pin of the night in 2:31, with
Abbas Abdulrahman closing out the night with a win via decision at 285 pounds, to give the Spartans a 43-3 victory.
The Spartans head to both the Penn College Invitational on Saturday, November 23 at 10 a.m. and the Stevens Institute of Technology Tri-Match at 12 p.m.
