Men's Hockey Downed by Top-Ranked Hobart

RUTLAND, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's hockey team was suppressed by No. 1 Hobart, 12-0, Saturday evening at Spartan Arena.

Zach Papapetros launched a team-high three shots while Cam Reid and Andrew Stefura each sent a pair of darts on net. In the Spartans' (5-10-0, 2-6-0 NEHC) defensive zone, Stone Stelzl and Zach Trempner had multiple-block nights with three and two stops, respectively. Josh Ward knocked away 27 shots before giving way to Dominic Rodrigue who collected four saves in the final 10:16.

After being held scoreless in the first 12 minutes of play, the Statesmen (13-2-0, 7-1-0 NEHC) tallied two goals to finish the opening period and went on to strike five times in both the second and third stanzas. Kahlil Fontana and Ignat Belov powered Hobart with hat tricks as Austin Mourar scored twice with two assists. Jonah Alexander had a game-high four helpers, followed by Tristan Fasig who added three.

The Spartans continue their homestand on Friday, January 12 against UMass Boston. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
