STOWE, Vt. — The Castleton men's tennis team got back into the win column Wednesday evening, scoring an 8-1 victory over NVU-Lyndon at Topnotch Tennis Academy.
In doubles action, Stanley Andersen/Andy Phelan topped Matthew Condon/James Salvas, 8-2, to give the Spartans (4-2) a flight No. 3 win. Top-spot pairing Miki Almirall/Phil Kluge muscled out an 8-4 triumph against Jeffrey Blais/David Gratton. NVU-Lyndon (2-5) picked up its lone point of the match in a second-flight tiebreak victory for Garrick Webster/Quinlan Peer.
Entering with a team-best 4-1 record in singles play, Phelan dropped Salvas 8-4 in a pro set at the sixth slot. Andersen nearly double-bageled Condon at No. 5, taking 6-1 and 6-0 sets. Jason Lipscomb snagged a narrow straight-set win over Gratton with an 8-6 tiebreaker triumph in the second stanza to clinch. At flight three, Connor Davis handed Webster a 6-1, 7-5 defeat as Kluge took down Peer in a 6-1, 6-4 second flight. In the day's lone super-tiebreak, Almirall emerged victorious against Blais with an 11-9 decision, capping an 8-1 non-conference victory for Castleton.
Returning to Little East Conference play this weekend, the Spartans travel to Bridgewater State on Saturday, April 1. First serve against the Bears is set for 1 p.m.
