Wrestling Rolls Past Western New England, 33-6

CASTLETON, Vt. – The 13th-ranked Castleton University wrestling program was victorious 33-6 over Western New England University on Friday night in front of a raucous crowd at Glenbrook Gym, improving to 13-5 on the season in dual matches.
 
The Spartans won each of the first five bouts on the night en route to victory, dropping only two out of 10 bouts in the match.
 
Gavin Bradley began the night with a win at 125, coasting to a 16-1 win via technical fall for a 5-0 lead. Drew Marchese followed up with a 21-6 tech fall of his own at 133 pounds to make it 10-0 before James Rodriguez won a 3-1 decision at 141. Nicholas Roeger landed a 12-4 major decision at 149 and Jashon Holmes added an 11-8 win at 157 to make it 20-0 at the midway point of the match.
 
WNEU got on the board at 165 with a decision victory to make it 20-3, but Cooper Fleming put Castleton back in the win column with an acrobatic 10-3 victory. Sampson Wilkins shut out Griffin Ostrom 9-0 to push the lead to 27-3 for Castleton after the 184-pound bout. A 3-2 decision loss at 197 made it 27-6 before Shea Garand pinned Spencer Dickinson midway through the second period at the 4:05 mark for a 33-6 final score.
 
In exhibition action, Castleton won 10 out of 15 bouts with Darius Mangiafico winning twice and Vito Rodriguez, Kaden Gransbury, Tylik Epps, Kyle Pokornowski, Caleb Rojas, Josh Negron, Stephen Jennings and Cruz Henton winning once each.
 
Castleton is back in action Saturday with a tri-match at Trinity with Alvernia. The first match starts at noon.
