CASTLETON, Vt. – The 13th-ranked Castleton University wrestling team picked up wins at all 10 weight classes on Wednesday night in a dominant 54-0 victory over New England College.
The Spartans improve to 9-4 on the season while NEC falls to 1-6 overall in dual matches. The two teams will face off once again on Sunday in the opening round of the NEWA Duals, with Castleton sitting as the No. 2 seed in the event and NEC the No. 15 seed. The shutout is Castleton's third of the year, and it marks the second time the Spartans have scored 50 or more team points in a dual this season.
Castleton opened the action with a win at 184 pounds, as
Sampson Wilkins pinned Kyle Gora just before the horn in the first period at 2:57.
Haven Tatarek won a tight decision 5-4 against Beau Dillon to put Castleton ahead 9-0 before
Shea Garand topped Francis Boahean with a pin in 2:08 for a 15-0 lead.
Kaya Bogle was victorious against Patrick Hughes, pinning him in 4:29. A 6-5 decision by
Michael Gonyea over John Lafferty pushed the Spartans' lead to 24-0 before
James Rodriguez made quick work of William Patterson with a first-period pin in 2:47. Leading 30-0, Castleton was awarded victories at each of the final four weight classes, with
Nicholas Roeger,
Jashon Holmes,
Darius Mangiafico and
Cooper Fleming getting credit for wins via forfeit.
Castleton took all four exhibition matches as well, with
Gavin Bradley,
Drew Marchese and
Caleb Rojas winning via fall, while
Caleb Massari was victorious with a 17-2 technical fall.
Castleton's next match is against the Pilgrims Sunday at the NEWA Duals.
