PINE VALLEY, N.Y. - The Castleton University men's hockey team suffered a 4-1 loss on the road to ninth-ranked Elmira Saturday afternoon. Freshman
Zach Trempner netted the Spartans' lone goal while fellow rookie
Dominic Rodrigue recorded 50 saves.
The Soaring Eagles (16-5-1, 10-4-1 NEHC) struck first just a minute and a half after the opening face-off, but Trempner's third goal of the season evened the score at 1-1 with just under seven minutes to play. Trempner was set up by Sargent, giving the junior defenseman his first career assist.
Trempner's tally was all the Spartans (4-18-1, 0-14-0 NEHC) would muster against the tough Elmira squad. The Soaring Eagles tacked on one in the second and two in the third to deliver the final 4-1 margin.
Rodrigue reached the half century mark in saves for a second time this season while Elmira's Chris Janzen totaled 26 saves. Castleton failed to convert on three power play opportunities - the hosts tallied one on three chances.
Castleton returns to action Friday February 11, hosting the first ever Breaking The Ice On Mental Health Game against UMass Boston at 7 p.m.
