GORHAM, Maine - The Castleton University men's hockey team gave eighth-seeded Southern Maine all it could handle on the Huskies' home ice, but ultimately suffered an overtime loss in Wednesday night's postseason action. Freshman
Romeo Torain netted his first career goal, while
Kyle Alaverdy became the fifth goaltender in program history to record over 1,000 saves in a career.
Torain's tally came midway through the second period as he and
Nicolas Garneau exchanged passes on an odd-man rush before Torain found the back of the net on a high-percentage look. The goal evened the score at 1-1, a tie that would hold for the remainder of regulation. Southern Maine's Austin Marini scored the game-winner at the 2:06 mark the overtime period, sending the Huskies to the NEHC Quarterfinals.
Southern Maine (8-13-1, 5-10-1 NEHC) opened the scoring early in the first period, but Alaverdy would stop the next 29 shots sent his way. His 14th save marking the 1,000th of his career, Alaverdy ranks fifth in the program's record book. He totaled 37 on the evening.
Castleton (5-19-2, 1-15-2 NEHC) saw the only power play opportunity of the contest late in the second period as the Huskies took a bench minor for too many skaters, but wasn't able to convert the power play chance and claim the lead.
The Spartans totaled 38 shots on goal, led by
Glenn Wiswell with five. Southern Maine's Kyle Penton matched Alaverdy with 37 saves.
The loss marked the end of the season for Castleton. Southern Maine advances to the NEHC Quarterfinals.
