NEW HAVEN, Conn – The Castleton men's hockey team wrapped up the calendar year with a matchup against Albertus Magnus Friday afternoon, falling 2-0 to the Falcons in hostile territory.
The Spartans (4-9-0, 2-4-0 NEHC) were outshot 48-27 in the game and failed to convert on any of their three powerplay opportunities, while Albertus Magnus (9-4-0) scored once with the man advantage.
Brandon Collett made his second consecutive start in net for Castleton and was excellent after allowing two first-period goals, tallying 46 saves in the contest to bring his season total to 207 in his seven appearances.
The Falcons struck first in Friday's game, scoring the game's opening goal five minutes in before doubling their lead with under three minutes to go to send the Spartans into the break down 2-0.
Castleton began the second period on the powerplay after an interference penalty at the end of the first gave them the man advantage, but were unable to get a shot on frame and the score remained 2-0. Halfway into the period the Spartans turned up the pressure once again, getting four shots on goal in just over one minute, but Albertus Magnus' Logan Bateman stood tall to deny Castleton of a score.
The game's final period was a battle between the pipes, as Collett added 16 saves in the period while Bateman turned aside 11 more Spartan shots to hand Castleton the 2-0 loss.
The Spartans will break for the holidays before returning to action Friday, January 6 with a matchup against UMass Boston. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
