Men's Hockey Ties #8 Babson Behind Wiswell's Late Tally, Rodrigue's 61 Saves

BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Castleton University men's hockey team battled eighth-ranked Babson to a 3-3 tie on the road Friday evening. The Spartans used three different goal scorers, capped by Glenn Wiswell, who tied the game in the final three minutes of regulation. Freshman netminder Dominic Rodrigue registered 61 saves in his first career start.

Castleton (1-5-1, 0-2-1 NEHC) trailed 3-2 with just over two minutes remaining when Wiswell found the back of the net for his first of the year. The fifth-year senior captain received a centering pass from Alex Maunula before sneaking a sliding backhander past Beaver goalie Brad Arvanitis. The 3-3 deadlock would last through the remainder of regulation and overtime.

Babson (3-1-2, 2-1-2 NEHC) doubled Castleton's shots in the extra session, but Rodrigue continued his strong play with six saves in the five-minute period. Rodrigue's 62 saves marked the most by any Spartan goaltender in a single game since Branden Gallagher registered 67 in the 2004-05 season.

The Beavers struck first in the opening three minutes of the contest, but Rodrigue would clamp down for the remainder of the period, stopping 19 shots. Bryce Irwin tied the game just over a minute into the second period with his first career goal. Andrew Barber sent a shot from the blue line in the final 30 seconds of a power play and the freshman was in position to redirect it past Gallagher.

The stalemate would last almost until the 14 minute mark of the third period when Babson reclaimed the lead. The Spartans would head to the second intermission facing a 2-1 deficit.

Setting the stage for an eventful third period, Brandon Picard evened the score once again just over two-and-a-half minutes into the stanza. Picard camped just to the left of the crease, finding open space with a man advantage, and redirected a well-placed pass from Irwin to convert another power play opportunity. The third period would feature another Beaver goal, however, as the hosts claimed a 3-2 lead at the 12 minute mark.

It was Wiswell's tally that helped the resurgent Spartans force overtime and subsequently the 3-3 tie.

Tallying two of its three goals with a man advantage, the Castleton power play recorded multiple goals for the first time this season.

Shots were 64-29 in favor of Babson. Picard, along with Stone Stelzl and Conner Ladabouche, led the way for the Spartans with four apiece.

Castleton faces another road test tomorrow, taking on Southern Maine at 4 p.m.
