WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Castleton men's hockey team saw its first live action since February 2020, dropping a road contest to Babson by a final score of 6-0.
The Beavers (1-0) opened the scoring midway through the first period when Max Torrez gathered a loose puck following a faceoff and fired a wrister past sophomore netminder
Brandon Collett.
Glenn Wiswell saw an opportunity to even the score soon after, but was turned away by Babson's Nolan Hildebrand. Castleton (0-1) would head into the first intermission trailing 2-0 as Cam Schmitt was able to extend the lead.
Babson tacked on two more in the second period as Chris Rooney scored unassisted and Ryan Black found the back of the net seven minutes later. The Spartans peppered Hildebrand with 13 shots on goal in the period, but weren't able to get on the board.
Matt Wiesner gave the home team a 5-0 advantage early in the final period after
Chris Butryn was sent to the box for slashing.
Kyle Alaverdy entered in relief of Collett at the 6:30 mark. The junior allowed one goal as Patrick Flynn became the sixth different Beaver to score.
Collett, who came just shy of breaking the program's record for saves in a season as a freshman, turned away 34 shots in 46 minutes. Alaverdy followed with six saves.
Offensively, Castleton was led by Wiswell, who tallied five shots on goal. 2019-20 NEHC Rookie of the Year
Calvin Moïse wasn't far behind with four. In total, Babson claimed a 46-25 shot advantage.
The team will hit the road again on Friday, February 12 to take on Albertus Magnus, before hosting the Falcons on Saturday for the home opener.
