Wrestling Claims Green Mountain Championship at Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Castleton University wrestling team claimed the Battle for the Green Mountain Championship for the second year in a row Wednesday night, defeating the Cadets 31-13 at Andrews Hall.

The Spartans claimed victory at seven of the 10 weight classes, highlighted by a pin from Michael Angers at 165 and a technical fall for Mitchell LaFlam at 197. Castleton is now 3-1 all-time in head-to-head matchups with Norwich and is now 2-2 on the season in dual matches.

The night opened with a forfeit victory at 125 for Joseph Valentino, before Norwich got on the board with a win at 133 when Cameron Wooldridge defeated Owen Kretschmer by decision.

Castleton bounced back with a 12-7 decision win by Travis Brown at 141, 12-7, and Max Tempel followed that up with a dominant, 13-3 win via major decision. Cooper Fleming hung on late for a 7-5 victory via decision over Tyler Barker at 157, before Angers earned the only pin of the evening for the Spartans in 2:01 against Nick Stehl at 165.

Chance LaPier sealed the victory for the Spartans with a major decision, 14-4, putting Castleton ahead 26-3 with just 18 potential points remaining in the match. Jason Hoffman fell via major decision at 184, but LaFlam dominated his bout from the jump, winning 21-6 via technical fall. The night closed with a loss for Castleton at 285, as Joseph Galusha was pinned, but the Spartans held on to win 31-13.

In exhibition action, the Spartans won seven of the nine matches, including five via fall and one via technical fall. Nicholas Camacho opened the exhibitions with a pin, followed by a pin by Antonio Pallaria. Ryan Butcavage won via fall as well, and Conor Eversole won with a 15-0 technical fall. Marlon Laing and Shea Garand closed out the exhibitions with victories via fall.
