Box Score BABSON, PARK, Mass. – Castleton's three-game winning streak was snapped this evening with a 4-1 defeat to the tenth-ranked Babson Beavers in New England Hockey Conference action at the Babson Skating Center.
The Spartans were outshot in the contest 40-29 and failed to convert on either of their two power plays, as they dropped to 4-13-1 (3-7-1 NEHC) on the season. Caleb Fizer scored the lone goal for the club, while Ryan Mulder suffered the loss despite allowing just two goals and producing 36 saves.
Four different players scored for the Beavers, led by Josh Casper, who tallied a team-best two points from one goal and one assist. Charlie Ackerman, Dan Casey and Tim Searles were the other three scorers, and Jamie Murray provided 28 saves to help the squad improve to 12-4-2 overall and 8-2-1 in the conference.
After more than 19 minutes of scoreless play to start the game, the tenth-ranked Beavers took the first lead of the game with just 17 seconds left in the first. Max Franklin and Casper provided the service, as Casey netted his seventh goal of the year to put the hosts in front 1-0.
The Spartans found their equalizer just 5:20 into the middle frame when Fizer tallied his first career goal, but Babson responded less than ten minutes later when Ackerman found the back of the net to reclaim the lead, 2-1.
The Beavers tacked on a pair of empty net goals in the final 1:52 of play to secure the season sweep over Castleton with a 4-1 victory.
The Spartans are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 4 pm when they square off with the No. 9 UMass-Boston Beacons at the Beacons Ice Arena in NEHC play.
