Box Score Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - The Spartans sealed a home-ice advantage in the first round of the ECAC East playoffs with a 5-2 win over Skidmore in their final regular season contest on Saturday evening in Saratoga Springs.
The Spartans used their depth to their advantage, as five different Spartans scored in the game. Castleton completed the season sweep of the Thoroughbreds to earn the fourth seed in the conference tournament.
The Spartans grabbed an early 1-0 lead with when Kyle Richards scored on a rebound at 4:56 of the first from Reid Lesswing. Ryan Frost made it 2-0 off a neutral zone turnover at 17:16 from Brian Greene and Josh Harris.
Skidmore got on the board at 12:15 of the second when Zach Menard scored on a short-handed breakaway to make 2-1. It was his 10th of the season. The Thoroughbreds held the Spartans to just one shot in the period.
Castleton came out strong in the third, going up 3-1 when Dan Bell put home a rebound for his 10th goal of the season from Justin Alonzo and Greene at 2:31. Skidmore responded when Thomas Park deflected one in at 6:37 from Ondrej Krajnak and Brendan Cottam.
The Spartans scored the next two for a 5-2 lead. Josh Harris scored his team-high 16th of the season at 7:35 from Ryan Delorme and Brad Barber, while Kyle Pichler scored a power-play goal at 11:25 from Bell and Frost.
Ben Freiberg had 13 saves, while Spencer Sodokoff had one over the final 8:35 in net for Skidmore. Erick Cinotti stopped 26 shots for Castleton, including three in a third-period 5-on-3.
The Spartans finish their season at 14-9-2, with a 9-8-1 record in the conference. Castleton will host fifth-seed New England College on Saturday Feb. 23.
