Box Score Rutland, Vt. – The Castleton Spartans grabbed an early 3-0 lead, but couldn't hold off a Potsdam third period comeback. The Bears scored three goals in the final frame to lock up the score at 3-3, which is how the tilt would finish.
Castleton opened the scoring 6:39 into the game when Ben Schoeneberger slid a pass between two Potsdam defenders and found a cutting Ryan Frost, who redirected the puck over the glove-side shoulder of Bears' goalie Austin Keiser to put the Spartans up 1-0.
In the second period, the Spartans added two more tallies to extend their lead to 3-0. During the one of the Spartans' killed penalties on the night, Ross Herzog picked the pocket of a Bears defenseman, and drove hard to the net. He wristed a shot between the pads of Keiser for the Spartans second goal, and Herzog's second short-hander on the year.
Schoeneberger notched his second goal of the year off of a rebound and a scramble in front of the net. After Keiser made the initial save, Schoeneberger gathered the rebound and fired it into the back of the net, lifting the Spartans to a 3-0 lead.
In the third period, the Bears came out fired up and scored within the first three minutes of the period. Adam Place scored on a power play off a pass from Zach Blake to make the score 3-1. Five minutes later, Matt Viola slipped one past Spartans goaltender Thomas Shelley to narrow the deficit to one.
In the final minute, the Bears pulled their goalie to get an extra attacker on the ice. Trevor Cope sprinted off the bench and into the action, finding Place, who fired on goal. The first shot was denied by Shelley, but Mike Arnold was there to finish the play for the Bears, burying the rebound to tie the score with 36 seconds remaining.
The overtime period went scoreless, and the game ended in a 3-3 draw. Keiser finished with 29 saves for the Bears while Shelley turned away 26 shots for the Spartans. Castleton moves to 7-5-2 on the year and will take on ninth-ranked Plattsburgh tomorrow night at 7 PM at Spartan Arena.
