Box Score Rutland, Vt.- The Castleton Spartans scored five consecutive goals to rally past the St. Michael's Purple Knights 6-3 Friday night at Spartan Arena in ECAC East action.
Colin Murray finished with a goal and two assists as six different Spartans found the net in the contest. The win marks the Spartans third consecutive victory, improving their conference record to 3-3-1.
Castleton struck first against St. Michaels just 3:38 into the first period on a power play. Murray wrapped around the net and wristed the puck over Purple Knights goalie Mike Dizgun to make it 1-0.
St. Michael's answered back just over three minutes later as Ryan Arsenault broke into the Spartan zone and shot it into Spartan defender Ryan Delorme. The forward was able to corral the ricochet and put it past Erick Cinotti to even the score at 1-1.
The Purple Knights took the lead on a power play at 16:58. Mark Higgins found Arsenault all alone in front of the net. The forward controlled the puck, spun around, and put it top shelf over Cinotti to make it 2-1 and pick up his second goal of the evening.
The Spartans scored the equalizer 3:48 into the second period. Brad Barber took a shot from the point that got knocked down in front of the net by Brett Zeggil. Ryan Frost found the loose puck in front of a wide open net for the goal.
Castleton took advantage of a delayed penalty on the Purple Knights later in the period, at the 7:11 mark. Dan Bell collected a deflected puck off the pads of Dizgun from inside the slot and fired it passed him to take a 3-2 lead.
The Spartans continued their rally just 24 seconds into the third period. Justin Alonzo took a shot on net that was blocked by Dizgun, but the goalie couldn't control the rebound. Murray kicked the loose puck to Josh Harris who wristed the shot high over the glove of Dizgun to make it 4-2.
The Spartans scored two more goals in the period to make it 6-2 before St. Michaels scored at 12:17 of the third period with a power play goal. William Cote was skating along the boards and set up Dan Evarts for a one-timer laser from the point, that sailed over the blocker of Cinotti to make it 6-3.
Cinotti finished the game with 20 saves while Dizgun had 17 saves and back up goalie Michael Comitini came in after the sixth Spartan goal and stopped nine shots.
Castleton improves to 3-3-1 (5-3-1 ECAC East) and returns to action tomorrow as they take on ECAC East opponent and in-state rival, Norwich at 4 p.m. at Spartan Arena. Tickets for the game are still available and will be on sale starting at 2 p.m. at Spartan Arena.
