PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State freshman Alex Brenton (Kanata, Ontario) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal midway through the third period to propel the No. 3 Cardinals to a 3-2 win over No. 4 Castleton Friday evening at Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh State struck first at the 2:41 mark in the second period after a scoreless opening stanza. Matt MacLeod (Woburn, Mass.) picked up the goal, assisted by Kyle Kudroch (Cottam, Ont.).
Castleton answered 12 minutes later as Colin Murray (Oshawa, Ont.) drew the Spartans even off helpers from by Cody Ayers (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Lindsey Gullett (Wawanessa, Man.).
Brenton set up Alex Jensen (Helsingborg, Sweden) to give the Cardinals the lead for good five minutes into the final frame, before providing an insurance marker five minutes later.
Justin Alonzo (San Jose, Calif.) brought the Spartans within a goal at the 14:39 mark off assists from Ryan Frost (Fullerton, Calif.) and Tyler Atkins (Brockville, Ont.).
Erick Cinotti (Mahwah, N.J.) stopped 22 shots for the Spartans, who have now lost two-straight for the first time this season and stand at 11-3.
Mathieu Cadieux (Oshawa, Ont.) made 24 saves for the 9-2-3 Cardinals.
Castleton travels to SUNY-Potsdam tomorrow at 4 p.m.
