GORHAM, Maine – Ben Schoeneberger (Vernon, Conn.) and Nick Lazorko (Rockwall, Texas) each scored a pair of goals to lead fifth-ranked Castleton State College to a 4-1 ECAC Division III Men's East win over the University of Southern Maine Friday evening at the USM Ice Arena.
Schoeneberger gave Castleton a 1-0 lead just over ten minutes into the contest, netting a power-play goal off assists from Josh Harris (Torrance, Calif.) and Justin Alonzo (San Jose, Calif.). Schoeneberger made it 2-0, once again on the power-play, 13:20 into the second period. The goal was Schoeneberger's 11th of the season, and 10th coming with a man-advantage, tops in the nation.
Lazorko made it 3-0 with four seconds remaining in the period, scoring off helpers from Harris and Dan Bell (Victoria, British Columbia).
Ben Pearl (Essex, Vt.) got one back for the Huskies 23 seconds into the final stanza, but Lazorko pushed the lead back to three with his team-leading 15th of the season ten minutes later.
Erick Cinotti (Mahwah, N.J.) finished with 20 saves to earn the win, while his counterpart Braely Torris (Eckville, Alb.) stopped 31 shots in the losing effort.
The Spartans are back on the ice tomorrow at 4 pm at the University of New England.
