RUTLAND, Vt. – Junior forward Cody Ayers (Colo. Springs, Colorado) scored one goal and dished out two assists while junior defenseman Tyler Atkins (Brockville, Ont.) handed out three helpers to lead No. 4 ranked Castleton past Connecticut College, 6-2, in ECAC East/NESCAC crossover action on Saturday evening on Lothrop School Night at Spartan Arena.
The Spartans, winners of 13-straight games, improve to 17-2-0 overall and 11-2-0 in the ECAC East. With the win, Castleton has tied the program record for most wins in a season which was originally set during the 2006-07 season (17-6-4). The Spartans have six regular season games remaining on the schedule in an attempt to break the record. The Camels fall to 6-9-3 overall and 5-7-1 in the NESCAC.
Connecticut College got on the scoreboard first at 9:44 of the opening period capitalizing on a Castleton turnover near the Spartans blue line. After gaining possession, the Camels worked the puck to Mike O'Donnell (Winchester, Mass.) and the junior forward potted his fourth goal of the season with a shot top beating Castleton goaltender Erick Cinotti (Mahwah, N.J.) top-shelf blocker side for a 1-0 lead.
Senior forward Stuart Stefan (Delhi, Ont.) tied the contest up only a minute later redirecting a shot from Atkins into the back of the net past Connecticut College goaltender Andrew Margolin (Mahwah, N.J.).
At 14:24 of the first, freshman forward Colin Murray (Oshawa, Ont.) took advantage of a 2-on-1 break ripping a wrist shot over Margolin's glove for his seventh goal of the season and a 2-1 lead for Castleton.
In the second period, Jonathan Lafrance (N.D.I.P., Que.) pushed the Spartans out in front, 3-1, with a blistering slapshot 10 feet in front of the blue line for his third marker of the season at 11:21.
Freshman forward Ross Herzog (Wainwright, Alb.) increased the lead to 4-1 at 18:29 of the period beating Margolin for his third goal of the season on assists from Ben Schoeneberger (Vernon, Conn.) and Atkins.
Early in the third period (1:19), Ayers lit the lamp putting home a rebound off of freshman defenseman Ryan Delorme's (Kanata, Ont.) initial shot from the point.
Sean Curran (Wilmette, Ill.) cut into the deficit at 12:16 of the period sniping a wrister over Cinotti's glove into the top right corner of the net for his team-leading 13th goal of the season. J.J. McGregor (Wichita, Kan.) and O'Donnell notched assists on the tally.
Justin Alonzo (San Jose, Calif.) put the game on ice only 32 seconds later stuffing home a loose puck through backup goaltender Mike Petchonka's (Ridgefield, Conn.) five-hole for a 6-2 score.
Cinotti turned away 15 shots to improve to 8-1-0 overall on the season. Margolin made 21 saves while Petchoncka had four saves.
Castleton returns to action on Friday, February 4 on the road against Southern Maine at 7 pm.
