NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Castleton State College men's hockey team (7-7-5) skated to a 5-0 shutout victory against Connecticut College (4-13-1) in an ECAC East/NESCAC crossover game played at Dayton Arena Saturday. Tyler Atkins (Brockville, Ontario) had a hat trick for the Spartans, who pulled away from the hosts with three quick strikes in a span of 3:43 of the opening period.
Brad Barber (Nepean, Ontario) dished out two assists and rookie net-minder Artie Hollinger (Homer Glen, Ill.) stopped 25 Connecticut College shots en route to his second shutout of the season.
Connecticut College senior Greg Parker (Trenton, Ontario) made 28 saves in the setback for the hosts.
Castleton opened the scoring at 13:12 of the first when Ben Schoneberger (Vernon, Conn.) scored his fifth of the season. Steven Miles (Nepean, Ontario) and Cody Ayers (Colorado Springs, Colo.) assisted on what proved to be the difference maker for the visitors. The Spartans extended their lead to two goals with 5:45 remaining. Dan Bell (Victoria, British Colombia) won a face-off to Atkins, who buried a low slapper from the point for the goal.
Stuart Stefan (Delhi, Ontario) closed out the first period scoring with 3:05 remaining. Josh Harris (Torrance, Calif.) dished to Stefan in the slot for a one-timer and the Spartans carried a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. Atkins would add single tallies in each of the final two periods of play in the 5-0 shutout victory for the Spartans.
