Rutland, VT - The Castleton State College men's ice hockey team scored a pair of third period goals to grab a 3-2 ECAC East win over visiting UMass-Boston.
Cody Ayers tied the score at 2-2 2:30 into the final period on the power-play, and Stuart Stefan potted the game-winner with 9:59 remaining to give Castleton the win.
With the win Castleton improves to 9-8-2 overall and 5-6-2 in conference play. UMass-Boston falls to 7-10-2 overall and 3-9-1 in conference action.
After a scoreless first period, UMass-Boston's Vinnie Jacona scored his seventh goal of the season just 1:45 into the second frame. Brett Calhoun and Chris Wyman assisted on the score. Brandon Heck answered six minutes later off an Eric Curtis assist for his ninth of the season, tying the game at 1-1. Wayne Sands gave the Beacons a 2-1 lead with 5:43 remaining in the period, but Castleton goalie Jay Seals was able to shut the Beacon offense down the rest of the way to earn the win.
Seals stopped 16 shots in his third win of the season. Kevin Bendel turned away 36 Castleton shots in the losing effort.
Both teams return to action on Friday, February 6. Castleton travels to Salem State, while UMass-Bosoton will host New England College. Both teams are scheduled for a 7:00 pm face-off.
