Potsdam, NY-The Castleton State College men's ice hockey team opened the second semester with a 3-2 loss at non-conference Potsdam State to fall to 2-7-1 on the season. Jeff Zatorski tallied 2 goals to lead the Bears to the win.
Zatorski opened the scoring after 3:28 of first period action with a power-play goal on assists from Vince Tarantino and Connor Treacy. At 9:45 Zatorski also tallied the final goal of the first period unassisted to send Potsdam to the locker room with a 2-0 lead.
After 6:47 of second period play, Evan Romeo put the Spartans on the scoreboard with the period's only goal. Brandon Heck and Matt Link assisted.
Potsdam's Luke Beck opened third period scoring at 6:33 with what proved to be the game-winner, unassisted. Steve Culbertson answered for the Spartans with a power-play goal at 18:08 on a Kirk Bolduc assist to pull Castleton to within one.
Despite pulling its goalie, Castleton was unable to tally a tying goal. Rob Barnhardt had 17 saves in the win for Potsdam. Castleton's Jeff Swanson had 16 saves in the loss.
The Bears have two non-conference contests planned for next weekend. They will host Manhattanville at 7 pm. on Friday before traveling to Western New England for a 7:30 game on Saturday.
Castleton returns to ECAC East action on Tuesday, January 8 when they travel to Skidmore College for a 7:00 pm face-off.
