Rutland, VT-The Castleton State College men's ice hockey team swept a weekend series for the first time this season as they defeated Hamilton 5-2 in ECAC East/NESCAC action.
Brandon Heck and Jeff Alexander each tallied a pair of goals in the win for the 6-10-1 (4-6-1 ECAC East) Spartans.
Alexander put the Spartans on top 11 minutes into the game, as he sent home his fourth of the season on the power-play, assisted by Evan Romeo and Steve Culbertson. Hamilton answered with under five minutes remaining as Chris Lorenc made good on the power-play with his first goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, however, Alexander once again tallied a power-play goal to give Castleton a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
Lorenc answered yet again for the Continentals with just over 1:30 remaining in the second period, knotting the game at 2-2 entering the final frame.
Heck notched the game-winner 7:10 into the final frame with yet another power-play goal. Marlin Froese added an insurance goal with just over three minutes remaining, again on the power-play. With four seconds remaining Heck put the finishing touches on the penalty-filled game with a short-handed empty-netter.
Scott Hefferman stopped 35 shots and took the loss for Hamilton (2-13-1 (1-9-1 NESCAC)). Jay Seals earned the win, making 20 saves.
