Castleton takes down Amherst 4-2 at home

Rutland, VT-Steve Culbertson had a goal and two assists, while Evan Romeo added a goal and one assist to lead Castleton State College to a 4-2 win over Amherst in ECAC East/NESCAC hockey.

After a scoreless first period, Castleton scored a pair of goals inside the first seven minutes of action in the second period. Culbertson found the net first on assists from Omar Pacha and Stuart Stefan just 1:38 into the second frame. just under five minutes later Brandon Heck converted on a short-handed goal assisted by Culbertson and Jared Lavender to make it 2-0. Amherst answered with 35 seconds remaining in the period as Keith Nelson sent home his fourth of the season to slice the lead in half heading into the final frame.

Michael McIntosh knotted the game at 2-2 just 3:15 into the third period off a Keith Nelson assist. Romeo had the answer with just over eight minutes remaining as he sent home the game-winner assisted by Culbertson and Craig Richardson.

Stuart Stefan tacked on an empty-netter with 49 seconds remaining as Castleton improved to 5-10-1 (3-6-1 ECAC East) on the season.

Jeff Swanson stopped 24 shots to earn the win. Cole Anderson stopped 30 shots for the 7-5-3 (5-3-2 NESCAC) Lord Jeffs.

Castleton will host Hamilton on Saturday, January 26 at 3:00 pm.
