Rutland, VT-The Castleton State College men's ice hockey team suffered its first loss of the young season 3-1 to visiting Saint Anselm College. Hawk captain Mike Foley tallied a pair of goals to lead St. A's to its first win of the year.
St. Anselm took advantage of a puck misplayed by the Spartans in their offensive end to take a 1-0 lead just 1:51 into the first period. John Hennessey controlled the puck and forwarded to Colin Fitzpatrick who passed to Foley for the breakaway goal. The Spartans would come back less than eight minutes later on a power-play goal when Jeff Alexander slipped the puck past Hawk goalie Jason Zuck from the left side of the net assisted by Evan Romeo. Three minutes later The Hawks would score the game winner as Mike Adams knocked home a Matt Grazioso assist.
Foley recorded the insurance goal, with 10 seconds remaining in the second period.
Despite out-shooting the Hawks 31-24, Castleton could not find the back of the net thanks to Zuck having a solid effort in between the pipes, finishing with 30 saves. Castleton goalie, Jay Seals stopped 23 shots in the loss.
Castleton returns to play next weekend as they host SUNY Morrisville in the first annual Rutland Herald Invitational Tournament. The Spartans will play in the 7:00 pm game on Saturday November 24. St. Anselm hosts Tufts University on Tuesday for a 7:00 pm start.
