Rutland, VT- Castleton held onto a 3-1 victory Friday night to defeat ECAC East foe Colby. It marked for the first time in school history that the Spartans defeated the Mules.
The Spartans took the lead in the first period and never looked back. The first Castleton goal came from Ryan Bartlett assisted by Steve Culbertson. Ross Carmichael netted the second goal for Castleton in the first period. Colby attempted to get back into the game scoring a second period power-play goal by Joe Rothwell. The Spartans came back less than two minutes later with the final goal by Steve Smiddy, making the score 3-1. The Mules got opportunities in the third period, but were continually turned away by Castleton goaltender Jeff Swanson, finishing the game with 34 stops.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 3-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in ECAC East play. Castleton looks to continue its winning streak Saturday as the Spartans host another conference opponent, Bowdoin at 3:00. Colby falls to 3-1, 2-1 in ECAC East and travel to Skidmore Saturday for a 4:00 game.
