SEASON PREVIEW: 2019 Women's Cross Country

CASTLETON, Vt. -- The Castleton University cross country teams will begin the 2019 season at Plattsburgh for the Cardinal Classic on Saturday, August 31.

There are only two returnees for head coach Mary Janiszewski's women's team as senior Kaylyn Crompton and junior Lydia Maier look to help lead the team.

Crompton posted three individual victories and one second-place finish in 2018 and was honored as team MVP for the second time in her career. She ran her season-best time of 19:49.2 at the Green Mountain College Invitational on Oct. 13. Maier registered fourth and second-place finishes in the Southern Vermont Invite and the Castleton University Invitational last season. She also posted her personal-best time of 20:01.3 on Sept. 15 at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational. 

The men are led by head coach Dave Heitkamp and he's entering his fifth season at the helm. 

Junior Oliver Rodgers competed in six races for Castleton as a sophomore and posted his personal-best time of 30:38.6 in the Green Mountain College Invitational. He recorded a pair of top-20 finishes and placed 64th in the LEC Championships. Senior Jared Wheeler posted back-to-back second-place finishes in the Southern Vermont Invite and the Castleton University Invitational last season. He achieved his personal-best time of 27:30.8 at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.

After this weekend, the teams will come home for the Castleton University Invitational on September 7 before hitting the road again for the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on September 21.  

The Spartans will also host the Vermont State Meet this season on Friday, September 27.
