CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University men's and women's cross country teams have finalized their competition schedule for the 2017 season, featuring five regular season races leading into conference and regional championships later in the fall.

The Spartans open the season Saturday morning, Sept. 2, at the Mountaineer Invitational, hosted by Southern Vermont College in Bennington, Vt. The Castleton women's cross country team enter the event as the defending champion, while the men's squad finished second in last year's race.

The following weekend, top area collegiate teams travel here for the Castleton Invitational, taking place Saturday, Sept. 9, on a course surrounding the Spartan Athletic Complex. The women's five-kilometer race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., followed by the men's eight-kilometer event at 11:45 a.m.

Castleton next heads to North Dartmouth, Mass., for the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational Saturday, Sept. 16. After a week off, the Spartans head to the Middlebury College Cross Country Course for the Vermont State Meet Saturday, Sept. 30.

The Spartans receive another week of recovery before heading south to Springfield, Mass., for the Western New England Invitational Saturday, Oct. 14, the final tune-up for Castleton before championship season.

The North Atlantic Conference Championships will be hosted by UMaine-Farmington at Mount Blue High School in Farmington, Maine, Saturday, Oct. 28, with the men's eight-kilometer race starting at 11 a.m., followed by the women's six-kilometer event at 12 noon. Grandon Smith is the defending NAC champion on the men's side, and Kaylyn Crompton won the women's conference title to cap an exemplary freshman season.

Castleton returns to Maine Saturday, Nov. 11, for the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships, hosted by Southern Maine University at the Gorham Country Club in Gorham, Maine. Once again, the men will compete first at 11 a.m., with the women's competition scheduled for 12 noon. The NCAA Division III National Championships will take place Saturday, Nov. 18, in Elsah, Ill.

Dave Heitkamp enters his third season as head coach of the Castleton men's cross country team, and Mary Janiszewski begins her second year at the helm of the Spartan women's cross country squad.
