Women's Cross Country Takes Fourth in NAC Preseason Poll

CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton women's cross country team placed fourth in the 2016 North Atlantic Conference preseason poll, conducted by the league's head coaches. 

The Spartans received 87 total points after posting a third-place finish in the 2015 NAC Championship. Maine Maritime edged out the Spartans in a narrow race for third place with 91 points, while Husson trailed the Spartans with 78 points in fifth place.

Colby-Sawyer takes the top spot as the favorite to win the conference in 2016 with 120 points and ten first-place votes. The Chargers come into the season with back-to-back NAC Championships over the past two seasons. UMaine-Farmington placed second in the poll with 107 total points. The Beavers received the remaining first-place vote after finishing second in the conference last season.
Rounding out the poll were New England (65), Lyndon (62), Johnson State (31), Thomas (31), UMaine-Presque Isle (29), and Green Mountain (25).
Castleton will have returning junior Elizabeth Bassette back to lead the Spartans after notching First Team All-NAC last season. Bassette will be running for a new head coach in Mary Janiszewski, who enters her first season at the helm of the Spartans after coaching at the high school level for the past 22 years.
The Spartans will open their season on Saturday, Sept. 3 in the Mountaineer Invitational with a scheduled time for 10:30 a.m.
