DUDLEY, Mass. – The Castleton University women's volleyball team's woes continued Tuesday evening as it dropped a non-conference matchup to Nichols College, 3-0, at the Nichols Athletic Center.
Castleton falls to 7-15 on the season after its losing streak extended to eight games, while Nichols improves to 11-10 on the year. The Bison hit .219 as a team with 33 kills, while Castleton hit -.013 with 20 kills.
Lizzie Goodrich and Madison Hamelink each had five kills, while Shannon Manchester had four of her own. Bre MacDuff had 16 digs and 12 assists, while Layne Cronin and Meghan Zawatsky had seven digs apiece. Zawatsky led the team with three digs, and Manchester was part of two blocks.
Chardae Saunders had a match-high nine kills, with teammates Jayleen Fegan, Regan Richard and Megan Gardner had six each. Gardner also had a match-high five aces, while Allyson Tuxbury added four. Fegan and Tuxbury tied for a team-high seven digs, with Saunders leading the way with two solo blocks.
Castleton got off to a slow start, dropping the opening set 25-10, but bounced back to make sets two and three competitive, 25-21 and 25-20.
The Spartans led the second set at the midway point, 11-8, but a 5-0 run by the Bison gave Nichols a 13-11 lead. Castleton took the lead back 15-14 before the teams traded points on the way to a 17-17 score. Four straight points by the Bison gave Nichols a 21-17 lead, but Castleton drew within two, 21-19. Nichols scored four of the final six points in the set, however, taking a 2-0 lead with a 25-21 win.
The Spartans once again jumped out to an early lead, 7-2, but Nichols stormed back to make it 7-6 after a 4-0 run. The two sides again traded blows until the Spartans led 16-13, but a 9-2 run by Nichols put the Bison on top, 22-18, before closing the set out 25-20 after back-to-back points to end the match.
Castleton takes the court again Saturday with a doubleheader at Plymouth State against the Panthers and MCLA at 12 and 2 p.m.
