DANBURY, Conn. – The Castleton University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday, falling to Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference contest before dropping a non-conference match to Nichols.
The Spartans (7-12, 0-5 LEC) were swept in both matches, falling to WestConn (15-4, 3-1 LEC) 25-16, 25-4, 25-9 before falling to Nichols (10-8) 25-17, 25-8, 25-8.
Shannon Manchester had seven kills and four total blocks over the two matches, while Lizzie Goodrich had six kills on the day. Meghan Zawatsky had 16 total digs, and Madison Hamelink added 10 digs along with four kills.
WestConn controlled play throughout, using a 5-0 run to take an early lead. The Colonials added four more points later in the set to extend its lead, before putting Castleton away with back-to-back points to end the opening set.
The Colonials opened the second set on a 15-0 run before later going on a 7-0 run to go ahead 24-3. The set was ended by a kill from Victoria Korzan to finish off a 25-4 frame.
The third set was much the same, as WestConn used multiple runs to pull away and defeat Castleton 25-9.
The Spartans opened the match against Nichols with an 11-6 lead, but the Bison rattled off 12 points in a row to take an 18-11 lead. The Bison never looked back, taking the set 25-17.
The next two sets were all Nichols again, as the Bison finished the match with matching 25-8 victories in the second and third sets.
Castleton returns to the court Thursday at SUNY-Cobleskill at 7 p.m.
