LONGMEADOW, Mass. – The Castleton University women's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win Saturday afternoon over Bay Path University, cruising in straight sets 25-9, 25-15 and 25-14.
Castleton improves to 3-3 on the season, topping the 2018 win total in just six matches. The Spartans hit .231 as a team compared to Bay Path's -.117 hitting percentage, and Castleton racked up 20 service aces.
Shannon Manchester led all players with 15 points on 10 kills, four aces and a block, while Bre MacDuff accumulated 18 assists, nine aces and six digs. Lizzie Goodrich and Madison Hamelink added five kills each, while Meghan Zawatsky had five digs and four aces.
Bay Path (0-5) was led by Lydia Clifford, who had six kills and a block. Marissa Courchesne added three kills and five digs, while Lisa Sikop led the team with six digs. Khyarah Gaston-Feliciano led the team in assists with eight.
Castleton jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in set one behind five combined aces from MacDuff and Manchester. After Bay Path made it a 13-7 match, Castleton extended the lead to 18-9 after three more aces. The Spartans closed the set on a 7-0 run with Ellie Frischmon serving the team to a first-set win.
The second set began the same as the first, with Castleton running outn to a 15-2 lead. After an 8-1 run by Bay Path made it 22-15, Castleton buckled down and rattled off the final three points of the set, capped with an ace by Layne Cronin.
The final set was a close battle in the early going, as Castleton led just 8-7 before going on a 3-0 run. The two sides traded points before Castleton went on a 6-1 run to go up 20-12. The Spartans then earned four straight points to take a 24-13 lead before Goodrich polished off the match with a kill to close out the set 25-14.
Castleton returns to action Tuesday evening when it hosts NVU-Johnson. The match is slated for 6 p.m. at Glenbrook Gymnasium.
